Why is My PS5 Putting Itself into Rest Mode

PS5 users have frequently complained about their PS5s randomly turning off or entering rest mode while playing or watching something.

This problem can be frustrating, especially if it occurs on a more regular basis. After all, a broken PS5 will be difficult to replace, given how difficult it is to find one to purchase.

Luckily, you don’t have to! There are some quick fixes you can apply. Let’s have a look at each of them!

Check for a Loose Power Cable

Before you do anything else, let’s start with the easiest fix: double-check your power cord.

It can be a problem if it’s loose or not correctly plugged in. There’s also a chance that the cable is defective. However, before getting it replaced, go through the other fixes first.

Disable Rest Mode

If your PS5 suddenly enters Rest Mode, you may have to disable the setting in the Options menu.

To do that, select “Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode” from the Settings > System > Power Saving menu.

There, you’ll find choices for “While Playing Games” and “During Media Playback.” For each of these options, select “Don’t Put In Rest Mode.”

Disable HDMI Device Link

The HDMI device link appears to be a main problem for users with soundbars, but it’s worth a go.

This function synchronizes the power state of your PS5 and your TV, so if one goes into sleep mode or is switched off, the other does as well.

To disable it, navigate to the Settings menu, then go to “System“, and then “HDMI.” Turn “HDMI Device Link” off.

Update Your PS5 Firmware

It’s possible that your PS5 isn’t running the most recent firmware which can fix issues and add new features. Typically, you’ll be told if your console requires an update, but it’s worth double-checking just in case.

First, you must be connected to the internet to download any updates.

Navigate to the ‘Settings’ menu and select System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.

Choose “Update System Software” then “Update Using Internet. If there’s an update available, simply choose the “Update” option.

Use Rear USB Ports

Use Rear USB Ports

There have been allegations of a fault with the PS5’s USB ports, notably the front.

If you use an external SSD or need to connect to a headset, the front port is the obvious choice.

However, it is recommended that you use the high-speed USB-A ports on the rear. Try doing this to see if it fixes the issue.

Check for Any Overheating Issues

Check for Any Overheating Issues

If your PS5 overheats, it will automatically shut down to safeguard its internal components from harm.

When it overheats, you’ll most likely see an error message stating, “PS5 is too hot. Turn off your PS5, and wait until the temperature drops.”

Sometimes, there is no warning that the system is overheating. This will cause your PS5 to randomly switch off.

However, if the console feels very hot to the touch, the fan makes a lot of noise before shutting off, or you’re having performance difficulties, an overheating problem could be the culprit.

Most of these problems can be avoided by keeping your PS5 well-ventilated.
