Feathers are primarily obtained from birds, as you would expect.

Hunting birds early on can be complicated, however, as they tend to fly away as soon as you approach them. You will need a ranged weapon of some sort, allowing you to kill them before they flee.

The easiest ranged weapon to get in the early game is the spear. Gather sticks and tape to craft a spear from your inventory.

With your spear in hand, find and carefully approach a bird. An easy target in the early game are seagulls, which can be found all over the beach where the game starts.

Aim your spear and throw it from a distance, using the throw prediction line to help. Avoid getting too close to the birds or you might scare them away.

If your aim is good enough, your spear will impale the bird, killing it. You can now approach it and collect meat and feathers near its corpse.

Note that the feathers will float away from the bird’s corpse, they’re not collected directly from it.

Aiming with the spear can take some getting used to, don’t be discouraged if you miss the first few throws. Just keep trying.

Alternatively, birds might naturally leave feathers behind when they take flight. This isn’t guaranteed, however, and you’re much less likely to get feathers this way. Still, it’s an option.

Later on, you should be able to craft better-ranged weapons, such as bows. These will make hunting birds easier.
