Pokémon GO: How to Get Primal Kyogre and Groudon

Primal Kyogre and Groudon are coming to Pokémon GO as part of the 2023 Hoenn tour, which will feature them in Raid Battles and unlock the ability to use Primal Reversion on Kyogre and Groudon.

The Hoenn tour will be available globally on February 25, 2023, and February 26, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM local time.

A limited participation event will also be available in Las Vegas on February 18, 2023, and February 19, 2023. Players outside Las Vegas will have to wait for the Global event, however.

But how exactly do you get the Primal legendaries? Let’s find out.

How to Get Primal Kyogre and Groudon in Pokémon GO

To obtain the Primal versions of Kyogre and Groudon, you’ll need to catch the normal versions of Kyogre and Groudon first. They can be found in Level 5 Raids, just like other legendaries.

Primal Reversion works like Mega Evolution. They are temporary transformations and you unlock them with energy obtained through various means.

To transform your Kyogre and Groudon into their Primal forms, you will have to obtain Primal Energy. Primal Energy can be obtained by defeating Primal Kyogre or Primal Groudon in Raid Battles or by completing research tasks.

Sadly, we don’t have the specifics on how much Primal Energy you will need yet. The developers haven’t released this information as of this writing, but they’ll surely tell us more as the Hoenn Tour gets closer.

Regardless, focus on doing Raids and research tasks and you should get all the Primal Energy you need.

What we do know is that, after obtaining enough energy, you can make your Pokémon undergo Primal Reversion. Like Mega Evolution, this lasts for 8 hours and provides numerous benefits.

Also, how much Primal Energy is required lowers by doing Primal Reversion more often. Kyogre’s and Groudon’s Primal Level will also increase, providing more bonuses.

Benefits of Primal Reversion

The benefits of Primal Reversion depend on whether you use it on Kyogre or Groudon. Predictably, they both provide unique bonuses in their Primal Forms.

Kyogre will provide attack bonuses during Raids to any Water, Electric, and Bug types in your party. Also, catching Water, Electric, and Bug types will give additional XP and Candy if you have Primal Kyogre as your buddy.

Groudon will provide attack bonuses during Raids to Fire, Grass, and Ground types in your party. With Primal Groudon as your buddy, you’ll get extra XP and candy when catching Fire, Grass, and Ground-type Pokémon.

As you can see, their benefits are similar but cover different types. Most notably though, they both provide benefits to 3 different types each. Keep in mind that attack benefits only apply during Raids.
