How Many Hours of Gaming is Too Much

I’m sure there are many experiences we share as gamers. Ranging from the sheer awe of traversing an amazing open world full of vivid colors to the adrenaline that swells from your veins as you hide from monsters in horror games.

As scary as that may be, there was nothing more dreading than hearing my mother enter my room and shutting down my PS2 claiming that I’d been playing for two days long.

In the spirit of all our angry mothers, we have crafted this article discussing how long is gaming considered too much.

We’ve heard many times in the past of people claiming an X amount of time is considered harmful for children or young adults. Most of the time, this information comes from sources with a not-so-good reputation.

We, as you probably do too, like to have good sources when investigating. As such, I decided to check the Harvard blog looking for insights.

In the last section of the writing, The Harvard investigation states that any potential harm caused by video games is easily repaired and that this should not be a reason for major concern.

As happens with many other areas of life, it turns out that moderation is once again the king of habits. Even if there is no short-term harm caused by video games, any child or young adult needs to have a healthy lifestyle to enjoy and live life to the fullest.

According to Harvard, gamers should be taught how to take care of certain parts of their bodies: elbows, wrists, hands, and eyes. It’s also important for gamers to learn how to take breaks so that these body parts aren’t harmed.

Too much stress on the hands and elbows may have serious long-term repercussions. 

To keep your hands, wrists, and elbows healthy, you should apply ice and even massages to keep potential inflammation and swelling low. Wrists are very injury prone, and it’s common for people to develop Carpal tunnel syndrome or “Gamers Thumb”.

As for your eyesight, Harvard recommends applying the 20:20:20 rule. Every 20 minutes, try looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This will help the eyes to rest from the constant stimulus on your pc or television.

Delving deeper into the gaming hours issues, I think it’s right to say there is no magical number of hours you can call it too much. However, there are some key symptoms present in the gamer that may be concerning: injuries, addiction, and lack of motivation around other aspects of life are indicators that you are playing too much.

We encourage players to be mindful of their habits and to listen to their bodies. If you think you have been playing for too long and that a break is mandatory, then take your time to relax and look away for a while.
