Age of Empires 2 New Player Guide Everything You Need to Know

Age of Empires 2 is one of the all-time greats in the real-time strategy genre. It’s a highly popular game that’s even considered one of the pillars of the genre.

Thankfully, Microsoft didn’t want this classic RTS experience to be forgotten by releasing Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition on PC back in 2019.

Even more recently, the game has now been ported to Xbox Series S and X in January 2023.

If you’re one of the many new players trying this classic for the first time due to these new releases, you’ve come to the right place!

Here’s everything you need to know about Age of Empires 2 and more.

Everything You Need to Know about Age of Empires 2

Age of Empires 2 is a very complex and deep game, so it’s definitely daunting to new players. We can’t possibly cover everything there is to know about the game, and some information is best learned naturally by playing.

Nonetheless, there are 3 basic mechanics that every new player should have a grasp of when getting started: resources, ages, and technologies.

Let’s dive more in-depth into these mechanics now!

Know the Resources

Everything you do in Age of Empires 2 relies on the 4 basic resources: wood, food, gold, and stone.

Each of these resources has a different and logical role in the game.

Food is used to keep your population alive, for example, while stone is used to construct buildings and walls.

You can gather resources by commanding your villagers. This also means you’ll want to have a good amount of villagers working for you at any time. The more villagers you have, the faster you can gather resources.

Gathering resources is pretty straightforward: chop trees for wood, mine stones for stone, hunt animals and gather berries for food, and mine gold veins to get gold.

Players on Xbox can use the Villager Priorities Menu to distribute how the villagers should gather resources to cut down on micromanagement.

Know About the Ages

Know About the Ages

The progress of your empire in Age of Empires 2 is defined by 4 different ages: Dark Age, Feudal Age, Castle Age, and Imperial Age.

As the ages pass, your empire will unlock the ability to create new units and buildings. For example, you’ll gain access to the blacksmith when you reach the Feudal Age.

You’ll want to keep ahead of other nations by advancing through the ages faster than they do.

You can advance through ages at any time at the Town Hall. You’ll require certain amounts of resources, but it’s fairly costly.

Once you meet the requirements, simply choose the option to advance to the next age.

Make Use of Technologies

Make Use of Technologies

Different buildings in the game provide you with the ability to research technologies.

Technologies can provide a large boon to your empire, such as making your villagers gather resources faster or giving you access to new buildings and units.

Which technologies to research are ultimately up to you and will depend on your own empire and its needs. However, what’s important is that you don’t neglect researching technology.

Each technology has a different requirement, such as building, costs, and even which Age your empire is in.

When you meet the requirements, choose the technology you wish to research and start investing in it. Note that it takes some time before any research can be completed.
